This article describes how exposure to trauma is pervasive in societies around the world and how it is associated with substantial costs to the individual and society, making it a significant global public health concern. They present factors at individual, relationship, community, and society levels as explanatory factors in the occurrence of trauma. They highlight targets for prevention of trauma and early intervention at all of these levels and describe the essential role of public health policies in addressing trauma as a global public health issue.
