The Seattle and King County Public Health Department, in collaboration with the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, conducted an HIA to evaluate the health impacts of the State Route 520 bridge replacement and HOV project. The HIA focused on several pathways and health issues including air quality, carbon emissions, traffic injury and opportunities for physical activity. The HIA made several recommendations to reduce the negative effects on air quality including that new or retrofitted diesel powered construction vehicles and equipment be used during the construction phase. The HIA also recommended that connected walking and bicycling facilities be installed throughout the corridor to promote physical activity.
