The Fulton County, Georgia, Department of Health Services conducted a rapid HIA of the Fulton Industrial Boulevard Framework, a redevelopment plan to revitalize an area of unincorporated south Fulton County in Atlanta. The plan includes transportation and freight improvements and changes the land use in the corridor, which was a center of industrial development in the 1950s and 1960s.

The HIA used surveys, community meetings, phone, and e-mail outreach to determine health priorities for community members and business leaders. As a result, the HIA focused on the potential health impact of increased air pollution related to widening Fulton Industrial Boulevard and increased vehicular capacity.

The HIA recommended effective roadway design, taking into account pedestrian safety and anticipated increased traffic capacity. It also recommended that area and regional transportation plans be enhanced to improve transit opportunities and promote alternative modes of transportation along the corridor.
